To show the benefits of T3/T4 in the rescue of hemodynamicly unstable brain-dead organ donors and, furthermore, to show the increment of transplanted organs and why hormonal therapy should be administered to all potential brain-dead organ donors, as this group will provide more organs in a better metabolic state than those without hormone replacement.
Professor Novitzky is a fully trained Cardiothoracic Surgeon who did his fellowship at the University of Cape Town. Also in Cape Town, he was involved in cardiac surgery and cardiac transplantation at Groote Schuur Hospital and surgical management of congenital heart disease at the Red Cross Memorial Children’s Hospital. For the past 20 years he has been Professor of cardiothoracic surgery at the University of South Florida, doing laboratory and clinical research, where he initiated the largest VA Cooperative "outcomes following myocardial revascularization on of cardiopulmonary bypass ". Professor Novitzky has also assisted in the organization of the Oklahoma Transplantation Institute at the Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City and did further research at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation and at the Stillwater Veterinary School. He has also done extended research on the physiopathology of brain death and was awarded The International Society of Heart Transplantation’s President’s Award. Professor Novitzky has worked in developing new surgical techniques for myocardial revascularization without the use of cardiopulmonary bypass and the repair of the ascending aorta -- aortic arch surgery. At the educational level, Professor Novitzky has taught medical students, residents and fully trained Cardiothoracic Surgeons; within this scope, he provided a review of basic sciences from a surgical perspective, indications of surgical procedures and ICU perioperative patient management. He has attended and organized meetings and symposiums, including live-telecasted, CME accredited cardiac surgeries. Currently he is the primary editor of Physiopathology of Brain Death and Donor Management in which all aspects related to management of brain-dead organ donors (BDOD) are addressed by reknowned experts on the respective topics.
