4.2 - Perioperative Antimicrobial Prophylaxis for Organ Transplant (with Spanish Audio Translation)

Presenter: Lilian M, Abbo, , United States
Authors: Lilian M Abbo

Overview

Perioperative infections remain an important problem for patients undergoing solid organ transplantation. For the prevention of these infections, perioperative antimicrobial prophylaxis has become the standard of care. Yet, the selection and duration of prophylaxis varies among centers. This presentation will review the available evidence and standards of practice to guide the optimal use of antimicrobials in the perioperative setting of renal, pancreas, lung, heart, liver, intestinal and multi-organ solid organ transplants.

Objectives

  1. Appraise current challenges in the prevention of post surgical site infections and the role of Antimicrobial perioperative prophylaxis
  2. Review the available evidence in the selection and duration of antimicrobial prophylaxis in solid organ transplantation
  3. Implement collaborative approaches to guide the appropriate use of antimicrobials in the perioperative setting based on risk factors and local patterns of antimicrobial resistance
