The Karolinska Institute in Sweden has started a Scandinavian clinical hepatocyte transplant program headed by transplant surgeon Professor Bo-Göran Ericzon. The hepatocyte isolation lab is headed by Dr. Ewa Ellis who was recruited from the University of Pittsburgh in 2008. The Karolinska University Hospital has a GMP-unit called Vecura that serves as a core facility at KI that has enabled this effort. The group focuses on treating metabolic diseases and developing functional serum markers of transplanted hepatocytes.
