Just Released - Transplantation - March 2023 Issue
There are some great overviews in this month addressing Eplet matching, Klotho, transplantation in patients with Sickle Cell disease and a thoughtful review of the relationships between infection and rejection. There is attention to increasing the use of marginal donors including livers from donors with abdominal trauma and with Hepatitis C. The science of organ perfusion continues to advance across organs from lungs to kidneys. New knowledge on managing cardiac, islet and uterine transplants ensure that there is something for everyone in this issue.
We evaluated whether the use of normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) was associated with increased organ recovery and improved transplant outcomes from controlled donation after circulatory death (cDCD). This is a retrospective analysis of UK adult cDCD donors‚ where at least 1 abdominal organ was accepted for transplantation between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2019.
Given the central role of sarcomeric dysfunction in cardiomyocyte biology and sarcomere alterations described in endomyocardial biopsies of transplant patients with rejection, we hypothesized that the serum expression levels of genes encoding sarcomeric proteins were altered in acute cellular rejection (ACR). The aim of this study is to identify altered sarcomere-related molecules in serum and to evaluate their diagnostic accuracy for detecting rejection episodes.
Compared with calcineurin inhibitor–based immunosuppression, belatacept (BELA)-based treatment has been associated with better renal function but higher acute rejection rates. This phase 2 study (NCT02137239) compared the antirejection efficacy of BELA plus everolimus (EVL) with tacrolimus (TAC) plus mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), each following lymphocyte-depleting induction and rapid corticosteroid withdrawal.
On Tuesday May 2nd at 17:00-18:00 local time (Eastern Time), all are invited to a special networking event where Dr. Jayne Danska (The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada) and Professor Lorna Marson (University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom) will talk about overcoming barriers to career advancement as a woman in the field of transplantation. A discussion will follow. There is no separate registration fee for this event for all who are registered for the ITS meeting, and all are welcome.
On the following morning, Dr. Danska will represent WIT during a session on Influence of Sex and Gender in Transplantation with a talk on "Interactions between Sex and Microbiome Responses", on Wednesday May 3rd at 08:00-09:20 local time.
