The risk of transmitting infections through solid organ transplants is extremely low in Australia. This is the result of the multiple processes used to reduce risk - donor selection, serological screening, and more recently screening using molecular (nucleic acid testing or NAT) assays. However, such screening needs to be continuously improved, and best practice requires use of monitoring processes to test for emerging infectious agents.
Governmental regulation of transplants also requires use of specific assays that are licensed through the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia. Results of screening donors for HIV, HBV and HCV at the SEALS Donor Screening Laboratory will be presented. The design of screening algorithms, and methods for reducing organ wastage through laboratory screening will be discussed.
