Recipients of hand and vascularized composite tissue allografts (VCA) face unique challenges with regards to post transplant infections, both due to the intensified immunosuppression exposure, frequent rejection episodes and exposure of the allograft to the external environment. Reports to date have identified Cytomegalovirus and fungal pathogens as the most significant causes of infection, particularly in those patients treated for rejection. Experience in recipients of solid organ transplants can be extrapolated to anticipate what infections may be seen as these transplants become more commonplace. This session will review major infections associated with transplantation, including diagnostic and treatment issues.
