There are a lot of studies about the complications of short bowel syndrome(SBS) such as dysfunction of liver, malnutrition, cholelithiasisï¼osteoporosis, kidney calculi. But the reports about bone marrow depression is rare. We found some SBS patients showed granulocytopenia, anemia and /or thrombocytopenia. The aim of this study was to investigate bone marrow depression in SBS. We reviewed the SBS patients admitted in our hospital from 2010 to 2012. Patients who had malignant tumor, hematologic diseases or use immunosuppressive agents were eliminated from our study. We counted the amount of patients who had granulocytopenia, anemia and /or thrombocytopenia. In the study, 44 SBS patients have been identified and we ruled out 6. Total 38 SBS patients aged from 13 to 64 added in our study. Patients showed granulocytopenia was 12(31.6%); anemia was 26(68.4%) and thrombocytopenia appeared in 9 patients(23.7%). Our preliminary study showed that a lot of SBS patients suffered bone marrow depression. The mechanism of this phenomenon needs further investigation.
