Biography:

Dr. Abbo is currently an Associate Professor of Clinical Infectious Diseases at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, core faculty for Infectious Diseases at the Miami Transplant Institute, has been the Medical Director for the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at Jackson Memorial Hospital since 2008 served as the UHealth Associate Chief for Patient Safety and Quality (2014-2016). Since February 2016, Dr. Abbo is the Chief of Infection Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship for Jackson Health System in Miami, Florida.

She obtained her Physician Surgeon (MD) degree in 1999 from Universidad Central de Venezuela, Escuela de Medicina “Luis Razetti”. Followed by an internal medicine internship at Jacobi Medical Center in NY, a residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach and a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Jackson Memorial Hospital/ University of Miami where she has been a faculty member since 2008.

Dr. Abbo has published five book chapters/ monographs and over 45 publications in peer-reviewed journals. She has given over 80 oral presentations and more than 50 abstracts in national and international meetings in the areas of antimicrobial stewardship, antimicrobial resistance and transplant associated infections. She is Associate Editor of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine and a reviewer on a number of journals including American Journal of Transplantation, Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology and Clinical Infectious Diseases.

In 2015, she became a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), and is a member of the Joint Antimicrobial Stewardship Taskforce, Quality Improvement and Education Committees for the IDSA. She is the Principal Investigator on a number of funded research projects related to antimicrobial stewardship.

Dr. Lilian Abbo is the President of the Women in Academic Medicine (WIAM) Advisory Board at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine since 2014 and the recipient of the 2016 May Brunson Award from the University of Miami Women’s Commission.
