Announcing the TTS - Dr. Sanjeev Kanoria Liver Transplant Award

The Transplantation Society is proud to launch a new biennial, $10,000 award—made possible by a $250,000 endowment from the Dr. Sanjeev & Sangita Kanoria Foundation—honouring excellence in liver transplantation. The first award will be presented at TTS 2026 in Sydney, Australia, this will be one of the most significant awards in liver transplantation globally, recognizing transformative contributions to science, innovation, and patient care. Nominations will open in November, stayed tuned for details.

Our sincere thanks to Dr. Sanjeev and Sangita Kanoria for their visionary support.

WTC2025 - Great Science, Great Experience

With over 5,000 participants from 70 countries, WTC 2025 was a great success—blending outstanding science with ample opportunities to network with colleagues from around the world. We’ll publish a more detailed report in an upcoming issue; in the meantime, please enjoy these photos of TTS leadership at the congress.

TTS2026 Call for Ideas & Session Proposals - Deadline August 28

Be part of shaping the future of transplantation at the 31st International Congress of The Transplantation Society (TTS 2026) in Sydney, Australia, September 20–23, 2026!

Under the theme Innovation through Collaboration, we’re inviting the global transplantation community to submit ideas that will make this a truly exceptional event. Whether it’s a full session proposal, a topic suggestion (with or without speakers), an innovative session format, a networking concept, or a fresh idea to enhance the attendee experience, your input matters. The Scientific Program Committee will review all submissions to complement the core program and ensure diverse, impactful, and forward-thinking content.

Deadline: August 28, 2025.

JUST RELEASED - Transplantation Direct Journal - August 2025 Issue

The August issue of Transplantation Direct touches many areas of transplantation, and is ready for viewing. Starting with pancreas transplantation, we have organ preservation articles on hypothermic machine perfusion (MP) of pancreas transplants, as well as ischemia-reperfusion injury biomolecular signature research in a porcine model. In liver transplantation, we have reports on the effect of waitlist low performance status (KPS) mitigation on outcomes in the US, and on how lactate clearance patterns after liver normothermic MP predict biliary complications after DCD. In lung transplantation, important recommendations are made to optimize lung utilization in donors over 65 years old. On the topic of kidney transplantation, patient immunosuppression adherence is analyzed in subgroups from the KTx 360° substudy, highlighting a “catch-up effect" for a specific patient subset. For our VCA readership, we have a global report on outcomes of nonvascular rectus fascia transplantation. For details on these articles and others, please visit our open access Transplantation Direct website.

Summary Report of the CTS-TIREX Expert Meeting 2024 “Innovative Approaches to Immunogenetics and Organ Transplantation”
Recent advancements in genetic modification of pig and human organs and immunosuppressive cell therapies started to evoke the hope that organ shortage and immunological rejection as the main challenges of organ transplantation could soon be overcome.
Recombinant Chitinase 3-like 1 Alleviates Liver Transplantation-induced Cold Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury by Promoting M2 Polarization of Kupffer Cells
Hepatic cold ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) significantly restricts graft utilization and adversely affects the prognosis of liver transplantation recipients. The overactivation of Kupffer cells (KCs) is recognized as a significant cellular response in hepatic IRI. This study aimed to investigate the potential of recombinant chitinase 3-like 1 (rCHI3L1) to regulate M2 polarization of KCs and alleviate hepatic cold IRI.

Exploring Caregiver Support as a Potential Mediator of Neighborhood Socioeconomic Disadvantage and Reduced Likelihood of Liver Transplant Waitlisting
Individuals from socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods may be at risk of inequitable access to the liver transplant (LT) waitlisting (WL), but mechanisms mediating this relationship are not well understood. We assessed whether area deprivation index (ADI), a measure of neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation, was associated with LT WL and assessed whether caregiver support, a potentially modifiable factor, mediated this relationship.
Longitudinal Course and Baseline Predictors of Trajectories of Clinician-assessed Adherence to Immunosuppressant Medication in Patients after Kidney Transplantation: A KTx360° Substudy
Optimal and maintained adherence to immunosuppressive medication is essential to kidney graft success.
