Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH) and the Department of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine are seeking a Transplant Hepatologist to join our growing Pancreas and Liver Care Center.

Nationwide Children’s launched its first UNOS-certified Pediatric Liver Transplant Program in 2017. The program is led surgically by Dr. Jaimie Nathan, Chief of Abdominal Transplantation and Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery, and Dr. Sara Rasmussen, Associate Surgical Director of Liver Transplant and Surgical Director for Transplant Quality (Abdominal), and medically by Dr. Alexander Weymann, Medical Director of Hepatology and Liver Transplant. The team continues to build with the recent recruitment of a third dual-fellowship trained pediatric transplant surgeon, Dr. Amanda Jensen, and a fourth transplant hepatologist scheduled to join in 2027.

Our center performs pediatric liver transplantation and combined liver-kidney transplantation for a broad range of indications, including hepatic malignancy and metabolic disease, across all pediatric age groups. Under Dr. Nathan’s leadership, the program has expanded both the scope and complexity of care provided to children with advanced liver disease. We perform technical variant graft transplantation, including split-liver and reduced-size grafts, and we also offer living donor liver transplantation.

In parallel with the rapid growth and continued development of the liver transplant program, we are seeking a board-eligible or board-certified Transplant Hepatologist to join the Pancreas and LiverCare Center. The successful candidate will be based in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition and will contribute to comprehensive clinical care, research, quality improvement, education, and advocacy in pediatric liver disease and transplantation. Academic rank will be commensurate with experience. The ideal candidate will hold a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ)in Pediatric Transplant Hepatology through the American Board of Pediatrics in collaboration with the American Board of Internal Medicine.

In addition to joining the transplant team, this individual will become part of a large, dynamic, and collegial Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition at NCH, which includes three pediatric hepatologists. Over the past five years, the Division has nearly doubled in size and currently ranks #4 nationally in U.S. News & World Report among children’s hospitals for Gastroenterology and GI Surgery. The Division includes 31 physicians, 6 pediatric nurse practitioners, 2 physician assistants, 10 fellows, and more than 40 dedicated nurses, research coordinators, dietitians, social workers, and other support staff, all working within a state-of-the-art 25,000-square- foot multifunctional GI Center that includes outpatient clinics, treatment rooms, endoscopy suites, conference rooms, and provider and support offices.

n 2022, we expanded our capabilities to include advanced endoscopy services such as ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound, and EUS-guided liver biopsy, and we established a robust multidisciplinary total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation (TPIAT) program for children with debilitating pancreatitis. Nationwide Children’s also offers exceptional opportunities for clinical, translational, and basic science collaboration through the Abigail Wexner Research Institute, which is home to internationally recognized investigators and has experienced substantial recent growth in interdisciplinary research and funding. The Hepatology and Liver Transplant group is an active member of several multicenter research and quality improvement networks, including the Starzl Network for Excellence in Pediatric Transplantation (SNEPT), the Society for Pediatric Liver Transplantation (SPLIT), and the Autoimmune Liver Disease Network for Kids (A-LiNK).
